Acoustic gaskets and threshold systems are the full family of accessories that seal an acoustic door: perimeter leaf gaskets, magnetic frame profile and the automatic drop-down threshold. A certified acoustic door reaches its rated Rw only with these details in place; a door missing a gasket or threshold can lose 5-15 dB.
What are acoustic gaskets and threshold systems?
An acoustic door is a tested whole — leaf, frame, gaskets and threshold — together. However good the leaf is, a 1-2 mm gap at the leaf-frame interface or under the door lets air through, and so the sound: performance drops dramatically. Acoustic gaskets and thresholds close those gaps.
Components
- EPDM perimeter gasket on the leaf — three edges (top + two sides)
- Magnetic acoustic gasket — for higher-class doors
- Acoustic frame profile — closes the leaf-frame gap
- Automatic drop-down threshold — seals under the door
- Fixed threshold profile — standard residential/office
- Acoustic mastic / sealant — breaks the frame-wall bridge
- Corner acoustic tape — junction-detail seal
What is an automatic drop-down threshold?
A drop-down is an acoustic threshold mounted into the underside of the leaf. When the door closes, it automatically drops down to seal against the floor; when it opens, it retracts. This achieves 0 mm clearance below the door — versus a typical 8-12 mm gap, this delivers an 8-12 dB Rw improvement. It is the standard for studios, cinemas and conference rooms.
Performance contribution
- No perimeter gasket: Rw -8 to -12 dB
- Only fixed threshold (8-12 mm gap): Rw -5 to -8 dB
- Drop-down + 3-side gasket: certified rating preserved
- Magnetic gasket: +1-2 dB at Rw 40+ class
Where it is used
- Mandatory on certified acoustic doors and windows
- Studios, cinemas, control rooms
- Conference, meeting and training rooms
- Hotel room doors (star-rating standard)
- Call centres and operations
- Hospital rooms and consulting rooms
Installation
The perimeter gasket is fitted continuously (no breaks) into the leaf groove. The drop-down threshold is mortised into the underside of the leaf and adjusted to drop with the closing force. The frame-wall joint is sealed with acoustic mastic; junctions and frame cuts are sealed with corner acoustic tape. After install, the system is verified with an air-leakage check (paper or hand-blow test).
