Barrier-backed composite foam is a laminated product combining acoustic foam with a high-density barrier membrane. The foam face provides absorption; the barrier face provides limited insulation. The ideal combination for industrial acoustic enclosures, engine compartments and OEM applications.
What is barrier-backed composite foam?
A specialty composite with acoustic foam on one face and a heavy membrane (5-10 kg/m²) on the other for sound-transmission loss. Two functions in one layer — making it the practical choice for confined spaces (engine compartments, vehicles).
Technical data
- Total thickness: 25, 35, 50 mm
- Foam-face NRC: 0.70-0.85
- Barrier Rw: 18-25 dB
- Barrier surface weight: 5-10 kg/m²
- Fire class: BS 476 Class 0 (FR versions)
Where it is used
- Industrial acoustic enclosure lining
- Engine / machine compartments
- Boat engine bays
- Automotive (engine-bay insulation)
- Caravan / mobile-home interiors
- Confined-space acoustic intervention
Direct use vs multi-layer composite
Barrier-backed foam is not a single-product foundation for an enclosure — it is a layer within a wider mass-spring-mass system. In our practice we recommend it as the interior lining for industrial enclosures.
Advantages
- Two functions in one product (absorption + barrier)
- Practical in confined spaces
- Fast installation
- Suited to OEM series production
