Felt forming (2D / 3D automotive interior)

Felt forming — 2D / 3D press-formed automotive interior felts. OEM series production for headliners, door panels, parcel shelves and engine bay.

TL;DR

Felt forming is the process of converting acoustic felt into automotive interior parts via 2D/3D hot or cold press forming. Headliners, door inner panels, parcel shelves, boot trims and engine-bay insulation parts — OEM and aftermarket series production. Combines lightness, acoustics and aesthetics in one part.

What is felt forming?

Felt forming is the process of pressing acoustic felt — typically PET, polyester or composite — into a mould under heat and pressure to give it the required 2D or 3D shape. The formed part provides acoustic absorption (NRC 0.40-0.75), impact-vibration damping and a finished interior surface. Primary use is automotive; also used in appliances and rail/aviation interiors.

Production technologies

  • Hot-press forming: thermoset-resin felt with heated mould
  • Cold-press forming: thermoplastic-bonded felt
  • Vacuum forming: thin complex geometry
  • Mould + blade combination: form + edge trim in one step
  • Surface lamination: fabric, leather, vinyl finish

Material types

  • PET / polyester felt: recycled, lightweight
  • Bi-component (BiCo) fibre: thermoplastic binder
  • Glass-wool composite: high temperature (engine bay)
  • Natural fibre (hemp, jute): sustainable alternatives
  • Barrier + felt sandwich: insulation + finish

Where it is used

  • Automotive headliners
  • Door inner panel insulation
  • Parcel shelves and boot inner trim
  • Under-bonnet engine-bay insulation
  • Felt layer under floor carpet
  • Appliance internal decorative insulation
  • Train and rail-system interior trim

Performance

  • NRC: 0.40-0.75 (thickness and density dependent)
  • Surface weight: 800-2400 g/m²
  • Thickness: 4-30 mm (after forming)
  • Temperature resistance: 90 °C standard, 150 °C engine bay
  • Fire class: FMVSS 302, UL 94 V-0 certified

OEM workflow

1) Drawing / 3D model + sample approval. 2) Mould manufacturing (CNC steel mould). 3) Pilot run and OEM quality testing. 4) Series production go-live. 5) JIT or stock-based supply model. 6) Lot reports and certificate traceability.
